cool your home the natural way

Hot and humid summer nights can be particularly difficult for those sensitive to temperature changes. But we all feel best when the temperature in our home is just right. In summer, therefore, the first concern becomes how to keep our home fresh and at the optimum temperature. Air conditioners help, of course, but there are other natural and more environmentally friendly ways to create a more comfortable climate at home.

Natural ventilation

Take advantage of natural ventilation during the cooler parts of the day, especially early in the morning. Open windows on opposite sides of your home to create a draft. This will allow fresh air to flow in and displace the warm, heavy and stale air.

Set the fan counterclockwise

Ceiling and portable fans are an excellent tool for improving airflow. In summer, set ceiling fans to rotate anti-clockwise and push air downwards. This will create a cooling breeze that will help maintain the optimum temperature and reduce the need to continuously run the air conditioner.

Stop direct sunlight

Keep curtains and blinds drawn during the hottest parts of the day, especially if your windows are exposed to direct sunlight. This simple measure can significantly reduce the amount of heat entering your home. This will, of course, make it easier to maintain a lower temperature.

A cool shower and a cold drink

There's no need to immediately turn up the air conditioning when it gets hotter. Take a shower with cool water to cool down or enjoy your favourite ice cream or cold refreshing beverage.
